A double-faced fertility mask of the Senufo, a traditional agricultural people of the northern savanna, renowned for their woodcarving, is used in forms of rituals for ancestor worship. Such masks are particularly prized by collectors. The Face mask or Kpelie represents ancestors. This mask has a variety of functions. It takes part in the rites of the Lo society at initiation ceremonies, funerals, and second burial rites for Lo members. It also is employed at Harvest festivals when thanks are given to ancestors who have helped to ensure good crops. The double-face masks are supposed to depict fertility and typically represent the union between a man and woman.
